GP Operator Ordinary Seaman

About the role

The General Purpose (GP) Operator supports shipboard maintenance, rigging, slinging, painting, preservation and housekeeping. Working under the direction of the GP Foreman, the operator ensures all tasks are performed safely and effectively while maintaining a high standard of safety behavior.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain effective working relationships and communications with colleagues, visitors and supervisors.
• Conduct slinging and rigging operations, including load preparation, use of plate clamps, barrel lifters, chain hoists and bundling of awkward loads.
• Provide hand and radio signaling to direct load movement, rig, sling and position blind loads.
• Prepare sites for abrasive blasting, clean surfaces, and apply correct paints or protective coatings.
• Inspect portable power and hand tools before and after use, reporting any defects.
• Maintain a clean, hazard‑free work area and report incidents promptly.
• Monitor pollution control measures, ensure discharges are within limits and manage waste disposal according to procedures.
• Participate in emergency response duties and demonstrate competence in drills and exercises.

• Ability to follow directions from the GP Foreman and ensure the safety of self, team members, visitors and subcontractors.
• Proactive attitude toward identifying and stopping hazards.
• Willingness to report defects, incidents and unplanned discharges promptly.
