Software Engineer – Backend (Level II) – Mobile App Team

About the role

Etsy is looking for a Software Engineer II to own the backend and API layer for its mobile app. You will join a multidisciplinary App T team, collaborating with native engineers, designers, analysts and product partners to deliver new features that drive traffic and engagement.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain robust backend services and RESTful APIs that power Etsy’s mobile experience.
• Collaborate with native mobile engineers to integrate new features and ensure seamless end‑to‑end functionality.
• Partner with cross‑functional teams (product, design, analytics) to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Write clean, well‑documented code, participate in code reviews, and uphold engineering best practices.
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, troubleshoot technical issues, and optimize system reliability.
• Prototype, test, and deploy large‑scale product improvements, using data‑driven experiments to validate impact.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years of professional backend or full‑stack development experience in a product‑focused environment.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across disciplines.
• Passion for building scalable, high‑quality services that serve millions of users.

Required skills

• Proficiency in at least one backend language such as PHP, Java, Python, Node.js or Ruby.
• Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs.
• Solid understanding of backend architecture, databases, and performance optimization.
