Animal Control Officer

About the role

The Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center is seeking a dedicated Animal Control Officer to assist stray, lost, ill, injured, and abandoned animals while enforcing city and state animal regulations. The role operates under the supervision of the Executive Director and serves as a professional representative of the center.

Key responsibilities

• Capture, handle, and provide care for animals in the facility’s custody following established policies and legal requirements.
• Assist in the selection process for euthanasia based on health and behavioral assessments.
• Investigate animal bite reports, advising owners and victims on procedures and options.
• Prepare reports, proposals, and recommendations based on facility activity data.
• Maintain relationships with public service organizations, municipal governments, vendors, media, and the community to support the center’s objectives.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum two years of experience in animal welfare or animal control.
• Ability to work humanely with unruly, dangerous, or vicious animals.
• Strong diplomatic communication skills with the public and peers.
• Fluency in English; Spanish bilingualism preferred.

Required skills

• Animal capture and handling techniques.
• Knowledge of relevant city and state animal laws and ordinances.
