General Purpose (GP) Operator – Able Seaman

About the role

The General Purpose (GP) Operator – Able Seaman is responsible for safe and efficient shipboard maintenance, rigging, slinging, painting and preservation activities. Working under the GP Foreman, the operator ensures that all tasks are performed in compliance with IMO Resolution A.1079/28 and company safety standards.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare, rig, sling and position loads using plate clamps, barrel lifters, chain hoists, slings, hooks and webbing.
• Perform hand and radio signaling to direct load movements and coordinate with team members.
• Set up and clean work sites for abrasive blasting, painting and coating, applying correct colours and protective materials.
• Inspect, maintain and report defects on portable power tools, hand tools and lifting equipment.
• Maintain a clean, hazard‑free work area and actively stop unsafe behaviours.
• Monitor pollution control measures, report unplanned discharges and ensure proper waste segregation.
• Record maintenance activities, report defects promptly and support emergency response duties as required.
