GP Operator – Ordinary Seaman (Shipboard Maintenance)

About the role

The GP Operator Ordinary Seaman ensures safe and effective shipboard maintenance, rigging, slinging, painting and housekeeping under the direction of the GP Foreman. This role is critical for maintaining vessel integrity and supporting daily operations at sea.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare, rig, sling and position loads using plate clamps, barrel lifters, chain hoists and other lifting equipment.
• Communicate load movements via hand signals and radio, ensuring precise placement of blind loads.
• Set up and clean work sites for abrasive blasting, apply paints or protective coatings, and restore areas after work.
• Inspect portable power and hand tools before and after use, reporting any defects immediately.
• Maintain a clean, hazard‑free work area and report safety concerns or incidents promptly.
• Monitor pollution control measures, manage waste segregation, and report unplanned discharges.
• Participate in emergency response duties and drills as outlined in the station bill.

• Ability to follow directions from the GP Foreman and work effectively with visitors and subcontractors.
• Strong communication skills for hand‑signal and radio coordination.
• Proactive attitude toward hazard identification and mitigation.
