Senior Medical Coding Specialist

About the role

ICON, a global healthcare intelligence and clinical research organisation, is hiring a Senior Medical Coding Specialist in Mexico City. The specialist ensures accurate and consistent coding of medical data for clinical trials and takes ownership of scientific operations deliverables.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the medical coding process for clinical trial data, ensuring accuracy, consistency and compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
• Manage the coding of medical terms using standardized dictionaries such as MedDRA and the WHO Drug Dictionary.
• Collaborate with clinical data management, safety and clinical operations teams to resolve coding discrepancies and ensure data quality.
• Guide and support junior coding specialists, ensuring proper training and adherence to coding best practices.
• Help develop and implement coding guidelines, quality control processes and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Meet project timelines and stay current with changes in coding standards, regulations and therapeutic area knowledge.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in a life science, healthcare or related field.
• Extensive experience in medical coding, working independently and guiding others.
• Certification in medical coding or clinical data management is a plus.
• Proven leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to manage coding teams and work across departments.
• Legal right to work in the country where the role is based.

Required skills

• In-depth knowledge of coding standards such as MedDRA and the WHO Drug Dictionary.
• Strong understanding of clinical trial processes, regulatory requirements and coding guidelines.
• Proficiency in coding software and clinical data management systems (CDMS).
• Attention to detail, analytical skills, excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
